Military Records Release
Their have been questions about my Military Records. Here are the two awards in question along with a letter from the US Ambassador to Indonesia about my security work there for the US Army.
One Award for thwarting a terrorist plan and saving lives. The other discusses my security plans I created being the gold standards for US Army Pacific Command during an inspection. The letter from the US Ambassador is for a job well done personally signed by him with some nice comments. Feel free to read for yourself.

This photo is from the first time I went to a combat zone when we protected many things... most importantly we protected the kids at this school.
The kids in the photo are happy because they knew as long as we were there they were going to live.

New Crosswalk Built!
This has been a trouble spot for traffic for some time. After talking to my fellow parents and the principal at the school I approached the Irvine Mayor and City Council. Our Mayor listened to my concerns and I directed me to Irvine City staff.
I met with the staff and explained the concerns about traffic safety. Within 4 weeks construction started on the crosswalk. Just today I received a follow up phone call from the city to let me know it’s complete.
Thank you Mayor Christina Shea and city staff for helping us take action to keep our kids safe at school.

75th D-day Anniversary
On the anniversary of D day 75 years later I reflect on my Military experience and how much D day influenced me and my family. I am thankful our service members faced hardship with strength and resolve to win.
The 82nd Airborne Infantry was my first Assignment in the Army. There I received a first class education on WW2 as the 82nd Airborne conducted combat jumps and played a key role in the invasion on 6 June 1944.
Reminders of the 82nd Airborne’s involvement in WW2 are everywhere around the division area on FT. Bragg, NC. From the names of our streets (like Ardennes, Bastogne and Anzio), Airborne monuments, our Airborne museum even our main drop zone is named “Sicily Drop Zone” (that I was MEDEVAC’d from twice) to remind us of our lineage as paratroopers.
Our 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment motto was “Strike Hold”. It came from WW2 in reference to striking the enemy fast, holding our positions and never giving up one inch of ground.
I was lucky enough during my time in division to spend time around WW2 Veterans during the 82nd Airborne’s annual “All American week” and hear their experiences. Eventually I was stationed in Germany, learned how to speak German, met holocaust survivors and went to Normandie to see it with my own eyes.
After all this time we need to always remember the sacrifices of the greatest generation and how our freedom is the most expensive thing we have even if we aren’t the ones who paid for it.

Every Time I go to this place and see my friends names on the walls of this memorial it is surreal.
I am glad the city of Irvine created this memorial and is such a patriotic city. Let us always remember our fallen and their ultimate sacrifice.

Wearing my uniform today to honor the fallen.
I have had the time to reflect on my career and the people I have lost in the Military. It hurts to attend these ceremonies but no matter, we must hold some things sacred in our lives and remember our fallen heroes.
Now retired and living an easy civilian life, I can really appreciate the sacrifices made by our service members and I am truly thankful for all of them, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can have our freedom. Your sacrifices will always be remembered.

Veterans Cemetery Location in Irvine Still Unclear

Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial
Remembering our fallen today. I found name on the wall of someone I served with.
SPC Kephart and his squad were ambushed on their 10th day in Iraq. Under heavy enemy fire and roadside bombs Kephart fired his .50 cal machine gun until a round exploded and jammed the weapon. He then grabbed his team leader’s m249 SAW and kept firing to suppress the enemy for some time until he was wounded by an RPG. The medics kept him alive until he was MEDEVAC’d but later died of his wounds. According to witnesses his heroic actions saved many other lives that day.
I tried to locate his dog tag but he did not have one on the display. I talked to the people in charge of the memorial/display. They assured me SPC Jonathan Kephart will get a dog tag for their display.

Northwood Memorial Ceremony
Never forgotten SFC Callahan and PFC Mason. Two names I was able to find easily of two soldiers I served with who died too young. I wish I had more time at the Memorial to research more friends that were lost.
Looking back at my life the past 20 years in the US Army seems surreal. It was good to see how much this memorial helps the community as well as myself. There wasn't a dry eye in the audience even my teenage daughter was moved. She hugged me and told me she was so happy am I alive when she learned about the many sacrifices our US Military and their families.
I hope the Irvine City Council can hurry up and get the veterans cemetery approved and start building it. Whatever site is chosen, please just get it done.

Just now speaking at Irvine City Council about the proposed 1,9600 unit rental project proposed by The Irvine Company.
My son is going on his THIRD year in a row on a waiting list to go to Woodbury Elementary which is right next to our home.
Maybe we should wait until we have built enough schools before we build more apartments?
What do you guys think? Should we build 1,960 more apartments?
The City Council will be voting to move the project forward shortly. Whatever happens please support our City Council they are doing the best they can and really trying hard to do what is best for Irvine.

This photo was taken a few years ago on the deck of the USS Missouri at Peal Harbor with myself and LTC Adonis Basto at his promotion ceremony that was held in private in the Captain's quarters. During this time in my Army career I had the great honor to be serving as the Aide-De-Camp to then Brigadier General Compton. The commanding General of the 9th MSC.
The USS Missouri is the ship that the Japanese surrendered on in 1945. The exact spot of the surrender is right behind the guns in the photo.
The war officially ended on the deck of the USS Missouri in 1945. It is now parked in Pearl Harbor next to the USS Arizona that was sunk by the Japanese attack on 7 December 1941 where the war began.
Interesting trivia fact: even though the Japanese had scheduled to come aboard to surrender formally, the US was still afraid of a surprise attack by the Japanese. The guns behind me in the photo were loaded and pointed at Tokyo along with other ships and 1,000 planes flying that were ready to attack. Thankfully the Japanese arrived as agreed, boarded the USS Missouri and formally surrendered.
I Personally have strong roots and family ties in Hawaii. 7 December is always a day that we observe and hold near and dear to our hearts.

Post Election Update
Now that the election is over it is time for me to get back to work.
I want to thank all of the volunteers and our donors who made the
campaign possible.
Everyone should be proud
of what we accomplished. We got 25,124 votes and nearly
won despite having limited resources and a very short period of time to
campaign beating out two other candidates with many times the funding we had.
The
establishment bullies went low we went high. We ran a clean honest
campaign that we can all be proud of. I am very proud of all that we
have done and that we kept it all positive. We did not stoop low to the
negative, hateful rhetoric that plagues our city's politics.
I
learned so much about the IUSD and Irvine, I hope I can use that
knowledge to help all of you. In the future if you or your family need
help in navigating IUSD or the City of Irvine I am hear to help.

Funding, growth focus of Irvine Unified school board candidates forum
Education lies front and center for many who move to Irvine.
This carefully planned community has become and a magnet for
aspirational young families from around the world and one of the state’s
fastest growing suburbs, thanks to its top-rated public schools.
That’s why an election for a school district board – responsible for
overseeing public schools – is such a big deal here. At a recent Irvine
Unified School District board candidate forum at the district office,
five of the six candidates on the November ballot shared their views
with about 50 attendees, as well as a local TV audience and a reporter
from a Chinese-language newspaper.
Although Irvine Unified is known as one of the highest performing
school districts in Southern California, it’s not free of challenges.

The show is a comedy with some gifted young actors who made the long evening quite entertaining. It was very interesting watching the process come together.
I played a police officer questioning a victim. They said they were looking for a 1992 LAPD look. Glad I fit the part. Thank you Sharmane for including me in your project.

A REAL HERO
While I was in Sacramento recently, I had the chance to visit my childhood hero Mike Sanders. Mike was a volunteer from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. He started helping my family when I was about 5 and has been there to help us ever since. I have many good memories of Mike, including his buying me clothes and playing monopoly with us as late as we wanted on the weekends as we didn't have a dad. Also, Mike helped me get a job as a teenager, and he helped me study for drama class in high school. Mike was there for many acts of kindness, including when my 25 year old brother died. Mike also kept a promise he made to me years before and gave me $100 for graduating high school. Mike gave me that $100, and he was there up until the day I went into the Army two weeks after my high school graduation. All this for a family that wasn’t his... Recently, I learned Mike adopted three children, who he raised and are now all grown up. I can't wait to see my hero again!
Mike isn't a rich person and he isn't some movie star or celebrity. He is a janitor and an everyday person just like you and I. Like everyone in his life, I am privileged to know him and he is my hero yet again. He is advising me on my campaign by sharing his knowledge he learned from spending over 20 years working with school boards.
The world needs more guys like Mike Sanders. If you ever see him around Sacramento thank him.
